Unpleasant Odors Near the Wetlands

Post by Issa »

We have received reports of unpleasant odor on the west side of town. In response, staff contacted the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and they too have received similar reports from other cities that are adjacent to wetland areas. These wetlands have mud-flats which are normally anaerobic (which means they are not exposed to air). However, recent “very low” tides have exposed these areas to air and this stimulates a biological process that results in a sulfur-like smell. The lack of rain and low wind speeds are thought to exacerbate these conditions. Unfortunately, there is nothing the City can do to control this natural process. Staff will continue to monitor the situation and will be meeting with representatives from the BAAQMD in the near future to examine the situation further.
