American Canyon High School Hosts State Farm, TDS for
Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant Award Presentation

State Farm® will present a check to the California Teens in the Driver Seat® (TDS) program at noon on October 20. The award is part of State Farm’s Good Neighbor Citizenship® Grant Program, which focuses on building “safer, stronger, and better educated communities across the United States” by rewarding initiatives in safety and education, including teen driver education. The check recognizes TDS and its efforts to prevent teen driver crashes through TDS program outreach in California.

American Canyon High School (ACHS) in American Canyon, CA, will serve as host for the presentation. ACHS is hosting a week’s worth of activities as part of State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive initiative. Activities coordinated by TDS will include drunk driving prevention demonstrations that allow students to drive TDS pedal karts through an obstacle course while wearing Fatal Vision (drunk) goggles to learn firsthand the effects of alcohol on vision and motor skills, as well as a safe driving pledge activity.

In addition to State Farm grant funding, the California TDS program, in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, receives support from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

About Teens in the Driver Seat®:
Started in 2002 in Texas, Teens in the Driver Seat is a peer-to-peer safety program that educates teens about the top five dangers of teen driving — driving at night; speeding and street racing; distractions, such as cell phones and teen passengers; not wearing a seat belt; and alcohol/drug use. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thanks to funding from State Farm and California OTS, program resources and technical support are available at no cost to schools in California. About Celebrate My Drive®:
Celebrate My Drive® is a different approach to a leading public health risk. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens, and a teen’s first year on the road is the most dangerous. Using research as a guide, State Farm® is approaching teen driver safety, a winnable public health battle, by engaging teens while they learn to drive in a supportive and positive way. It’s a community celebration of safe driving habits emphasizing the benefits of safe choices as teens celebrate the freedom that comes with getting a drivers’ license.
