Statewide Water Reductions Required

Post by Issa »

Jason Holley, City of American Canyon CITY

Earlier this week, Governor Brown directed the State Water Resources Control Board to implement mandatory water reductions in cities and towns across California to reduce water usage by 25%. This is the first time the State has ever issued this kind of mandate, but this is also the first time we've experienced a four year drought.
What does this mean for American Canyon?

We are still reviewing the Governor's new Executive Order. The Order contains a broad to-do list for various state agencies and over the next months, these agencies will adopt emergency regulations, programs, etc. to implement the intent of the Order. Once the details of these regulations and programs are known, we will have a better understanding of the implications for American Canyon. At that time the City Council will need to adopt new and/or modify existing local ordinances where applicable.

We highly encourage all water customers to be judicious with water. Last year the residents of American Canyon did a very commendable job when asked to save water; consumption was down by 18% compared to 2013. It is important to note that the governor's mandate to save 25% will also be measured from 2013; it will not be in addition to what you already conserved last year. In the next few months, residential customers will likely be required to limit outdoor sprinkler irrigation and other changes.
