The Napa County Sheriff’s Department is pleased to announce the implementation of the Hunter Education course. The California Department of Fish and Game requires all new hunters to participate in and pass the course before they can obtain a hunting license.
The Hunter Education course is designed for the new hunter and seasoned hunter alike. The course covers several topics that include safe weapon handling, legal responsibilities, fair chase, game identification, wildlife law, as well as ecological and environmental awareness, preservation, and conservation.
The main focus of the Hunter Education course is safety and ethics.
The course is required by the California Department of Fish and Game for all new hunters before they can obtain a hunting license.
Experienced hunters will also benefit from the course as it provides a good refresher of the basics. It is also an outstanding opportunity for family learning.
The Sheriff’s Department is offering the course free of charge to all participants.
There is no minimum age requirement for participants. However, the course involves sitting in a classroom environment for several hours, as well as reading and material comprehension, and independent home study. It is recommended that no one under the age of 12 participate. Any participant under the age of 18 is required to have a parent attend all sessions. The course is approximately 16 hours in duration and will be conducted over 3-4 evening sessions. Classes are offered 2-3 times a year based on interest. The course is also available to group organizations.
The next class is scheduled for March 12-15, 2007.
